The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has issued a GM Cruise license to allow passengers to ride without the driver behind the wheel. This is the first time (PDF) the board has issued this type of license. And it's a significant step forward for CPUC's autonomous vehicle passenger service pilot program. Other competitors Waymo and Cruise already have "driving" licenses from regulators. But they still need to get a "unmanned" license to be able to fully automate their passengers.

That said, Cruise has yet to slotxo start charging customers. As Prashanthi Raman, Cruise's director of government affairs, explained to TechCrunch:If you look at the website of DMV Cruise, along with Baidu, Waymo and many other autonomous companies, there are licenses required for full autonomous testing. However, they still have one more hurdle to overcome. Before they could run robotaxi services in the state: securing licenses At the moment, only Nuro is licensed to operate commercial services in California.

Because the company's vehicles are only used for transportation of goods. not a passenger So there's no need to go through the CPUC authorization process anymore.Back in May, Reuters reported that both Waymo and Cruise had submitted their DMV license applications earlier this year. if successful They will both be able to start offering paid delivery services to the public and offer paid passenger services.
